Remembering George Valentine

21 February 2025

basketballscotland is deeply saddened by the passing of George Valentine, a respected referee and a cherished member of the basketball community.

George's officiating career spanned decades, beginning at the international level in 1985 and continuing long beyond his retirement from the global stage in 2001. His dedication to the game never wavered, and he remained a familiar face at competitions across the UK and Ireland. His knowledge, dedication and passion for the game earned him the respect and admiration of all who had the privilege to share the court with him.

As a FIBA referee and commissioner, George played a vital role in the sport both on and off the court. He was also instrumental in supporting national competitions in Scotland, serving as the Appointments Officer for many years, ensuring games were officiated to the highest standard. Beyond this, his impact on officiating extended to developing future generations as he supported the growth of many high performing referees in his role as a National Instructor, helping to shape the future of officiating in Scotland.

Beyond his officiating, George was a true character—his warmth, humour, and generosity left a lasting impact on those around him. His love for the game and the people within it will not be forgotten.

Our thoughts are with George’s family and friends at this difficult time.

Rest in peace, George.
