Course Outline 

Description: This course is an exciting practical based course, designed to teach candidates how to develop physical movement skills, technical skills and build basic tactical understanding by using games-based coaching. Candidates will need to consider how they will use what they have learned to ensure the practices are inclusive.  

On completion candidates will gain the skills needed to assist in facilitating fun, inclusive and engaging basketball sessions. Candidates will be assessed during the course.

Pre-requisites: The candidates must be at least 14 years old when attending the course.  Before coaching, coaches over 16 years old are required to attend a Child Welfare and Protection in Sport workshop or equivalent and hold a PVG. We would recommend all coaches attending an appointed persons first aid course.

Delivery: this course is covered over 3 hours and can be done on one full day or over a number of sessions. This course is fully practical.

Cost: £30 per person

Course Outline

Description: There is an option to add on to your Skills Coach Award and gain an SQA Qualification at SCQF Level 5.  

On completion candidates will gain the skills needed to understand their role in the coaching environment including safety and planning of sessions.  Candidates will be assessed via video submission of their coaching session.

Pre-requisites: The candidates must be at least 14 years old and hold the Skills Coach Award or equivalent (e.g. Make it Happen, Getting Started award, UKCC Level 1)

Delivery: This is a research project where you will be required to do your own research, speak with other coaches and use the information and learning materials found on the basketballscotland website to complete a portfolio of work.

Course Outline

Description: This is a fun and interactive course, designed for those who wish to commit to coaching basketball Teams.  It hopes to inspire a group of coaches to challenge their thinking and improve their confidence in breaking down and teaching team and individual basketball concepts.   Candidates will begin to reflect on their generic and technical coaching practices and their role in establishing working relationships to develop themselves and others.

On completion candidates will be able to lead engaging, safe basketball sessions which develops their players into games.  They will also have an awareness of further personal development opportunities in basketball.

Pre-requisites: Candidates must be 16 years old or above on Day 1 of the course and hold a current PVG.  They must also hold the Make it Happen award or have previous experience of playing basketball and be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of coaching (APL).  Candidates will be expected to be coaching competitive basketball. 

Before coaching, coaches over 16 years old are required to attend a Child Welfare and Protection in Sport workshop or equivalent.  We would recommend all coaches attending an appointed persons first aid course.

Delivery: The delivery method of this course follows a blended learning approach.  Candidates are expected to attend all of the below. 

  1. E-Learning Modules
  2. 2 x 1.5 hour Online Classroom sessions with a tutor or half a day in person
  3. 2 full days on court 2 (9am – 5pm or 4 evenings)
  4. 1 Professional Discussion with a tutor based on the on-course assessment
